The National Design Award of Latvia Competition 2019
In mid-January submission of entries will begin for the National Design Award of Latvia 2019 (NDAL 2019) competition. The message of this year’s award is “Design is an Action”, highlighting design as a goal-oriented process of creation, resolution and improvement. This year, significant changes have been made to the NDAL 2019 judging process. As a result, for the first time, this year’s competition will give the 20 finalists the opportunity to present their submitted entry to both the jury and the public.
On 1 November 2018, to mark the start of the month of celebrations commemorating the proclamation of Latvia’s independence, a press conference was held at the offices of Accenture, the main partner of NDAL 2019, at which the message of this year’s competition was announced, along with changes to the process for submitting and judging entries. In addition, the identity of this year’s jury members was revealed.
Speaking at the press conference, Minister for Culture Dace Melbārde emphasised that, “During the past two years, the National Design Award of Latvia has firmly established itself as an integral part of Latvia’s cultural events calendar, at the same time providing a gateway to global design events for the competition’s winners. Moreover, the National Design Award of Latvia has also significantly enhanced the public’s understanding of design and its relevance. I challenge Latvia’s talented designers to take part in the next competition, because the award is not just a professional trampoline domestically, but also serves as a springboard for international success. As before, next year the main prize presented by the Ministry of Culture will be EUR 2,000 enabling the winner to participate in an international design event.”
Submission of entries for NDAL 2019 will begin on 14 January and end on 14 February. Competition entrants will be required to submit their entries electronically, completing the application form on the homepage: www.designbalva.lv.
Significant changes have been made to the procedure of judging this year’s competition entries, specifically in regard to the process of identifying the winner. This year, all 20 finalists will have the opportunity to present their entry to the jury and members of the public, and to answer the jury’s questions, making a three minute presentation. The finalists’ presentations will be judged by a jury of leading design experts and the winner of NDAL 2019 will be announced at the awards ceremony on 4 April.
The 2019 National Design Award of Latvia’s international jury will include six industry experts: the Head of the Victoria and Albert Museum Design, Architecture and Digital Department, and Creative Director of the 2018 London Design Biennale, Cristopher Turner (London, United Kingdom), designer and co-owner of the “TALENTED” brand Indra Komarova (Riga, Latvia), Director of the inter-disciplinary design studio Dotdash with over 30 years’ experience working in design, Despina Macris (Brisbane, Australia), the winner of the first NDAL, Infogram Head of Product Design Jānis Godiņš (Riga, Latvia), Creative Director at the Fjord Design Studio and Head of the Design Department Head at the Helsinki Office of Accenture Interactive Daniel Bosch (Helsinki, Finland) and the winner of the 2018 London Design Biennale, designer Artūrs Analts (Riga, Latvia). On 2 April, members of the public will have the chance to meet the jury members in person at a special conference at which the jury member will give public presentations and take part in a discussion.
According to NDAL 2019 jury representative, designer Jānis Godiņš: “Mankind has reached a point, where we live in an environment, where there only thing that is not created using the process of design is ourselves. It is important to realise this, because we are all entitled to ensure that this environment is accessible, responsible and created for each of us. We are entitled to good design and to stand up for it, including in Latvia."
